Course Description

This Masters in Research (Health Research) Programme (MRes) is planned as a first step in research training for nurses and allied health professionals currently working in clinical areas (NHS and other health settings) who may want to develop a health related research component to their career. It may also be of interest to junior doctors, specialist registrars and those wishing to seek a more clinical academic career. The structure of the programme is such that existing research nurses may wish to access parts of the MRes Health research on a modular basis. You will be provided with a foundation within which different research paradigms can be explored in consideration of the diverse health and clinical needs of various populations. You will critically consider the essential attributes of Evidence Based Practice and how these can be applied conscientiously and judiciously within nursing, midwifery and allied health professionals. You will explore and critically analyse the essential components of research governance and the necessary project management skills required to undertake high quality, ethical research that is sensitive to risk and needs of vulnerable populations. You will effectively contribute in the affirmation andor acquisition of health related knowledge by completing a credible and in-depth investigation of a research question or clinical problem related to a health related area of practice and as a result produce a thesis which accurately and ethically reports the findings. To provide a firm and robust foundation upon which you can progress towards doctoral research training programmes and pursue a research career and research leadership for the future progression of the profession. In your contribution towards raising the nursing, midwifery and allied health professionals national and international research profile in accordance with the University of Birmingham?s RAE and International Strategies. Objective Goals for the MRes Health Research Programme is to increase both your research capacity and capability to enable you to operate at the highest level of research and develop a new emerging research infrastructure. On completion of this programme you will have: ? The skill, awareness and intellectual discipline to carry out effective high-quality research in a patient-centred, ethically sound manner, in line with the requirements of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) ? The ability to identify a research question of value to their area of clinical practice to apply the selected methodological analytical approaches with rigour and to draw conclusions with insight and honesty ? The critical skills and professional application indicative of an effective, ethically-minded, independent researcher by the production of a thesis that approaches publishable quality ?
