Course Description

The Prenatal Genetics and Fetal Medicine MSc aims to provide medical and science based students with a comprehensive knowledge and understanding in the field of prenatal genetics and fetal medicine, specifically human genetics, human embryonic development and fetal medicine. What and how will I learn? On completion of the programme, students will gain a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the field of prenatal genetics and fetal medicine, specifically in the areas of basic genetics, medical genetics, genetic mechanisms, organogenesis and fetal development, prenatal diagnosis, preimplantation genetic diagnosis, gametogenesis, preimplantation development and IVF and fetal medicine. Degree Structure Students undertake courses to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of eight core courses (120 credits) and a research project (60 credits). A Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits, full time nine months, part-time two years and flexible study three years) is offered. Core Modules Basic Genetics Genetic Mechanisms Medical Genetics Gametogenesis, Preimplantation Development and IVF Prenatal Diagnosis and Screening Organogenesis and Fetal Development PGD Fetal Medicine Dissertationreport All MSc students undertake a clinical or laboratory based research project, which culminates in a dissertation of 10,000 words. Assessment is through coursework, essays, problem booklets, examinations and the dissertation and viva. Why should I study this degree at UCL? Those applying for scholarship funding (particularly overseas applicants) should take note of application deadlines. Who can apply? The programme is suitable for medical and science based students who wish to specialise in this field and develop the skills required by today s science and clinical staff, such as oral and poster presentations, writing scientific documents, IT skills and laboratory techniques such as PCR and FISH.
