Course Description
This programme is ideal for graduates who wish to extend their knowledge and critical understanding of the criminal law and specific issues in criminal law. You focus on the theory underpinning the criminal law, examine some of its complexities critically and explore contemporary issues in criminal law. Through this process you develop advanced legal research skills. Consequently, you are able to move from a general question such as What is the justification for the State making something a crime? to the more specific What is the justification for the State drawing the limits of criminality here? How you learn You learn by a variety of methods which are mainly student-centred. You develop the necessary comprehensive and critical understanding of techniquesmethodologies appropriate to research and advanced scholarship by attending workshops and seminars. These skills, and guided reading, enable you to make informed contributions to the workshop discussions. Research and academic writing skills are further developed in your option modules, allowing you to target your research towards more specialist fields of enquiry. This provides a platform from which you can proceed to complete your dissertation. How you are assessed You are assessed by a diverse range of methods including presentations, literature reviews, essays, examination, a research proposal and your dissertation. An individual presentation in the core module of Criminal Law Theory allows you to demonstrate a critical understanding of the relevant issues. You are required to undertake appropriate research using skills particularly developed in Contemporary Issues in Criminal Law and a literature review and dissertation proposal are the methods of assessment for this core module. Essay assessments in other modules, coupled with development of your research skills, provide the impetus for the completion of your dissertation, ensuring that your written communication skills meet the standard required at postgraduate level.
