Humanities and Social Sciences Department of Social Sciences This course offers advanced studies of the interrelationships between international politics and international law. The interrelationship is a long-standing one, and a strict separation between politics and law rarely applies in the international context. Since the Peace of Westphalia of 1648, international law has been one of the key media through which the political diplomacy of states takes place. Conversely, international legal deliberations are rarely undertaken without political considerations and insofar as the international legal system develops ?rule of law? - like autonomy, it does so under particular political conditions. If the interrelationships between international politics and international law are of long historical duration, they have hardly become less salient in contemporary times. As societies have become increasingly connected and interdependent, the range of policy issues that fall within the remit of international politics has increased dramatically and these issue areas tend to be highly juridified. For quite some time now, international politics has been not only about traditional military diplomacy, but relates also, and increasingly, to norms and standards of economic interaction, global communications, international human rights, and the management of the global commons (eg the environment). There is, then, a demand in academe, in policy-making communities, and in the NGO sector, for personnel with in-depth knowledge and understanding of how international politics is practised through law and how international law functions against the backdrop of political contexts. Drawing on the research expertise of interdisciplinary scholars, this course aims to provide you with such knowledge and understanding.
