Course Description

AIMS This programme aims to provide graduates with theoretical knowledge and practical skills in enabling technologies, relevant to the design of mobile and embedded computing systems, which play a dominant role within the emerging information society. It also provides a wide range of transferable skills in research, knowledge acquisition and project work. PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION This degree programme includes only the full-time mode of study and is normally completed within one year. This is an advanced programme with a strong emphasis on project work and self-directed learning. None of the material is taught at the undergraduate level. A unique feature of this programme is a blend of subjects normally attributed to electronic design, communications and software engineering. Such a wide coverage reinforced with skills developed in the coursework and the individual project creates specialists capable of integrating into a commercial design group with reduced in-house training. The optional modules add flexibility to the programme, catering to the needs of the engineers either in the field of hardware or software wireless embedded design. The programme combines leading research and teaching expertise in mobile communications and distributed computing from the School of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering. The School is equipped with teaching and research facilities to deliver a high quality programme in this modern multidisciplinary field. The course is delivered by staff from internationally-recognised research groups carrying out internationally-recognised research projects. You take compulsory modules (90 credits) in: wireless and wired network technologies, simulation of wireless communications, sensor networks, real-time computer systems, design of asynchronous and low-power systems, reconfigurable hardware design, SoC test strategies. Two optional modules (30 credits) are chosen from the following list: mobile and cellular communications, RF engineering, biometrics and recognition, advanced multimedia systems. You also complete an individual project (60 credits) in association with one of the School?s research groups.
