Course Description

AIMS Increased environmental degradation, environmental legislation and a drive towards greater environmental protection have created a demand for scientists skilled in the assessment of environmental resources and problems associated with their exploitation. This interdisciplinary programme aims to broaden the training and experience of students whose first degree is in biology, environmental science, hydrology, physical geography or a related subject. It also aims to equip you with the skills required for employment within the environmental assessment industry, or in governmental and non-governmental organisations which have statutory involvement in the environment. PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION You take 80 credits of compulsory modules and select 30 credits of optional modules. You also complete a research project leading to a thesis (70 credits) that may be undertaken in the UK or overseas. Compulsory modules typically include: ecological survey techniques environment and habitat assessment field class GIS and remote sensing environmental assessment ? land and water resources environmental systems and modelling sustainable development and environmental change and a foundation module in quantitative techniques, experimental design and data analysis. Optional modules (10 credits each) may include: trees ? growth, management and environmental impacts environmental and rural resource economics soil and water conservation land reclamation tropical environments ecology and land use habitat mapping and resource assessment environmental impact assessment pesticides ? use and environmental properties wildlife conservation ? policy and practice and ecosystem management. Entry Requirements

Normally a lower-second-class Honours degree, or an international equivalent, in a relevant discipline, such as biological sciences, earth sciences, geography, environmental sciences or agricultural sciences.
