Course Description

Throughout the course you will be introduced to the canon of photographic history from the 19th to the 21st Century, while being taught how to engage critically with images, equipment, history and digital resources. You will develop skills in a critical theory and visual analysis covering the history of images and the material and cultural history approach to photography. The year comprises three semesters. In semester one and two you will study two core modules: ? History of Photography, Images and Practice (Autumn) ? Theory and Photography (Spring) In addition you will attend smaller specialised modules, two in each semester: ? Photography and Industry ? Photographic Ethnographics ? Photography Resources in a Digital Age ? Research Methods for Photohistory In semester three, you will be involved in independent study, writing a master s thesis.

 

Entry Requirements

This course is for those from a variety of disciplines including conservation students, archivists, historians of science and from various fields of visual studies, for instance visual anthropology, photography or art history.
